In the summer of 2019, I rocked snow boots into JFK airport in 90 degree weather to get on a plane to a place that will surely stay with me forever, and let's just say, it was a VIBE.
Founded in 1982 by 6 women and 1 man dedicated to establishing a safe haven and transition home for women and children fleeing violence, Atira is a not-for-profit organization based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Atira works within the Downtown Eastside, dedicated to supporting women and children affected by violence by offering safe and supportive housing and by delivering education and advocacy aimed at ending all forms of gendered violence.They are our die-hard ally in impact and food security within these communities.
With support and funding from Atira, A Better Life Foundation based in Canada delivers almost 2,000 daily meals to women and children fleeing violence, street-entrenched youth, and those living well below the poverty line. The "Daily Meal Program" is a cornerstone of A Better Life Foundation's social impact work and critical to the health and stability of our neighbours who need them most.
